CCLS

On November 19, 2024, The Centre for Chinese Legal Studies (CCLS) at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) had the honor of hosting Dr. Yongyi Shou from Zhejiang University on November 19th, during his visit to Pakistan. This visit was organized with the support of the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) at LUMS, further solidifying the collaborative relationship between the two esteemed institutions.

Dr. Shou was warmly welcomed by Ms. Minahil Toor Riaz, Operations and Outreach Lead of the Centre for Chinese Legal Studies. During his visit, Ms. Toor provided Dr. Shou with a comprehensive overview of CCLS’s key ongoing initiatives, which have been instrumental in fostering stronger academic, legal, and cultural ties between China and Pakistan.

One of the primary topics of discussion was CCLS’s prominent Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) project, which aims to explore and develop ADR frameworks for cross-border disputes, particularly those arising from projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Research Associate Mr. Usama Bin Zafar briefed Dr. Shou on the project's progress, highlighting its potential to streamline conflict resolution processes between Pakistan and China in the context of major infrastructure and development projects.

Another area of focus was the Chinese Language Course offered by CCLS, which has garnered considerable interest from professionals, legal practitioners, and individuals in the business community. This course is part of CCLS’s broader initiative to promote deeper cultural and linguistic understanding between the two countries, and it serves as a vital tool for those involved in business and legal dealings with China. The language program aims to create a bridge for more effective communication and collaboration.

Moreover, Dr. Shou was briefed about CCLS’s diverse cultural initiatives, including cross-cultural workshops, seminars on Chinese cultural practices, and events promoting China-Pakistan cultural exchange. These initiatives are designed to foster mutual understanding, celebrate the rich cultural heritage of China, and strengthen people-to-people ties between Pakistan and China. The Centre regularly hosts events such as Chinese tea ceremonies, martial arts demonstrations, Chinese painting workshops, and festivals celebrating Chinese holidays. Additionally, CCLS organizes lectures and interactive sessions that highlight various aspects of Chinese culture, including its history, traditions, and contemporary developments. These activities play a vital role in enhancing cultural awareness and creating opportunities for dialogue between the two nations, contributing to a deeper, more holistic understanding of China’s influence on global affairs.

Dr. Shou’s visit highlights CCLS’s commitment to expanding its international footprint and enhancing academic cooperation with leading Chinese institutions like Zhejiang University. The Centre continues to build partnerships that not only advance legal scholarship but also enhance the broader collaboration between Pakistan and China.

This visit underscores the growing importance of institutional partnerships in the context of international education, legal studies, and cultural exchange. CCLS looks forward to continuing its engagement with Zhejiang University and other academic partners to further strengthen academic and professional ties between the two nations.
