On December 15th, 2024 Dr. Sikander Shah, Director of the Centre for Chinese Legal Studies (CCLS), Shaikh Ahamd Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL) at LUMS, delivered an engaging talk on "China's Global Diplomacy: A Catalyst for Peace and a Trusted Partner for Pakistan" at the University of the Punjab. The talk was part of a one-day seminar on “The Belt and Road Initiative: A Pillar of Growth and Collaboration in the Global Economy,” organized by the Regional Integration Centre, University of the Punjab, in collaboration with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and the Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future.
Dr. Shah highlighted China’s growing role as a global mediator and an influential force in resolving disputes by emphasizing its traditional values and commitment to transparency. He underscored how China’s internal governance remains independent of political pressures, showcasing stability as a hallmark of its progress.
Discussing the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Dr. Shah noted China’s success in fostering economic collaboration globally, particularly its role as a pillar of growth for developing nations like Pakistan. He emphasized the geographical and economic advantage for Pakistan, as a neighboring country to China, which has emerged as a leading global economy. Pakistan, he stressed, stands to benefit significantly from this strategic proximity, enabling progress and development through strengthened partnerships.
Dr. Shah further explained that even other big economics, despite political differences, rely heavily on trade and business ties with China, reflecting its importance in the regional and global economy. He also highlighted China’s ability to act as a better mediator on various international platforms due to its balanced approach and diplomatic strategies.
The session served as a lively interactive forum as students engaged with Dr. Shah, asking questions about China’s diplomatic influence and the Belt and Road Initiative’s role in shaping perceptions globally. Dr. Shah’s insights encouraged a nuanced understanding of China’s role in fostering peace, promoting economic growth, and serving as a trusted partner for countries like Pakistan.
The seminar brought together scholars, students, and diplomats to explore the growing importance of regional integration, economic partnerships, and the Belt and Road Initiative’s transformative impact on global economies.
