Dr. Sikander Ahmad Shah Delivers Insightful Lecture on Social Media Governance at LCWU
On February 11th, 2025 Dr. Sikander Ahmad Shah, Director of the Centre for Chinese Legal Studies (CCLS), Shaikh Ahmed Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL) at LUMS, delivered an insightful lecture at Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) on "International Perspectives on Jurisprudence Regarding Social Media Content." The lecture was part of CCLS’s broader initiative to engage with academic institutions across Lahore, fostering institutional collaboration and knowledge exchange.

The session explored the evolution of social media regulation, highlighting the shift from platform self-regulation to increasing government intervention worldwide. Dr. Sikander examined key challenges, including the rise of harmful content, failures in corporate accountability, and the political motivations driving digital governance.
He further emphasized the need for Pakistan to develop a balanced regulatory framework that safeguards religious sentiments, combats extremist content, and maintains moral standards while ensuring the protection of freedom of expression. Drawing from global best practices, he discussed regulatory models such as the EU Digital Services Act, the UK Online Safety Act, and India's IT Rules, analyzing their relevance for Pakistan’s evolving digital governance landscape.

The lecture concluded with a dynamic Q&A session, where students actively engaged in discussions on the complexities of social media regulation, digital rights, and governance challenges in Pakistan.
Through such academic engagements, CCLS continues to provide platforms for meaningful dialogue and knowledge exchange, strengthening research and policy discussions on governance, law, and digital regulation in Pakistan.
