Centre for Chinese Legal Studies at LUMS Explores Collaboration with the University of Liverpool’s Confucius Institute
On Thursday, 5th December, 2024: The Centre for Chinese Legal Studies (CCLS) at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) hosted an online meeting with Dr. Lei Peng, PhD, Lecturer in Chinese Studies and Coordinator of the Confucius Institute at the University of Liverpool. Dr. Peng, who is part of the School of Histories, Languages, and Cultures under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Liverpool, engaged in an enriching discussion with Dr. Sikander Ahmad Shah, Director of CCLS; Ms. Minahil Toor, Operations and Outreach Lead; and the CCLS team. The meeting explored avenues to foster cultural and academic collaboration between the two institutions.
During the meeting, several potential areas of partnership were highlighted. A prominent proposal involved launching a talk series featuring faculty from the Confucius Institute. These talks would cover a diverse range of topics, including Chinese culture, law, music, and film. By promoting such exchanges, the initiative seeks to build mutual understanding and create platforms for academic dialogue between Pakistani and Chinese scholars and cultural practitioners.
Another exciting area of collaboration discussed was the joint organization of a film and music festival. This festival would showcase diverse works in Chinese cinema and music, aiming to offer audiences in Pakistan an immersive experience of Chinese artistic traditions. The event would feature expert speakers, panel discussions, and performances, creating opportunities for cross-cultural appreciation and academic reflection.
Joint research engagements and academic initiatives also emerged as a key focus. Both institutions expressed interest in promoting Chinese legal studies, Chinese language education, and thought leadership on contemporary issues related to China. Collaborative projects, including comparative studies on legal systems and cultural practices, were proposed to strengthen academic ties and produce meaningful research outcomes.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to further develop these ideas into actionable plans. Both institutions committed to working closely on formalizing these initiatives and exploring additional opportunities for partnership.
This collaboration aligns with CCLS’s mission to promote cultural understanding and academic excellence by building bridges between Pakistan and China. The Centre remains committed to creating platforms for dialogue and learning that contribute to greater global understanding and cooperation.
