CCLS Hosts Chinese New Year Celebration
On February 25th, 2025, the Centre for Chinese Legal Studies (CCLS), Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL) at LUMS hosted a celebration of the Chinese Spring Festival, marking the Chinese New Year with an evening of cultural festivities, traditional games, and culinary delights. The event brought together students, faculty, and members of the Chinese community to celebrate this significant occasion and strengthen cultural ties. Alumni of the CCLS Chinese Language Course (HSK 1) also joined the festivities, reconnecting with the community and sharing their experiences of learning the language.
The celebration was honored by the presence of distinguished guests, including Mr. Du Yue, Director of the Political Section at the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lahore; Mr. Wang Yaqiang, Vice Consul at the Chinese Consulate in Lahore; and Ms. Ho Yuk Bing, a valued member of the Chinese International Academy and Chinese Overseas Association in Lahore. Their participation reaffirmed the deep-rooted friendship between Pakistan and China and the importance of cultural exchange.
The festival featured a variety of interactive activity stalls that engaged participants in traditional Chinese customs. Attendees took part in the Lost in Translation challenge, where they guessed the meanings of Chinese phrases, and the Zodiac Battles, a three-stage competition with food vouchers for the winners. The Red Envelope Challenge highlighted the tradition of giving red packets as a symbol of prosperity, while the Noodle Slurping Contest added an element of fun and friendly competition. One of the main attractions was the Lantern Art station, where participants wrote Chinese characters or decorated lanterns to take home. Mr. Yin Bingquan guided students in writing their names in Chinese on flying lanterns, providing them with a hands-on experience of traditional Chinese calligraphy.
A key highlight of the event was the interactive Photo Booth and Wall of Messages. The photo booth, decorated with Chinese characters and a panda, allowed participants to take fun pictures with their faces framed in themed cutouts. The Wall of Messages provided a space for attendees to write their wishes for the New Year, adding a personal and meaningful touch to the celebration.
Adding to the festivities, food stalls offered a delightful taste of Chinese cuisine, serving Chow Mein, Boba Tea, and Dumplings. The culinary experience was a major highlight, giving attendees the opportunity to explore authentic flavors of China.
The Chinese New Year celebration at CCLS reflected the strong cultural ties between Pakistan and China. By fostering an environment of learning, appreciation, and engagement, the event successfully brought together diverse communities in the spirit of friendship, cultural exchange, and celebration.
